Just For Fun Some Ozu

Some enterprising young man or woman edited together a series of “Pillow Shots,” from Yasujiro Ozu’s late color films. Decontextualized, the shots are strange, haunting, and beautiful. And a great introduction to the framing and composition techniques of Japan’s greatest director.

On a personal note, we’d like to mention that we hate the term pillow shot and think that whole way of conceiving of them and the way Ozu implements them is wrongheaded and reductive. Okay. Cool.

The Den, one of our favorite Chicago theaters, is about to launch their first production of the 2011-2012 season, Tennessee Williams’ Summer & Smoke.

There are a plethora of good reasons to see this show, starting with this video shot by our own Jack, going onto the fact that Tennessee Williams is an American genius, and Summer & Smoke is probably one of his few plays that you do not currently know the ending of, and the final reason being The Den is a beautiful space filled with creative and innovative young artists.

So go check out their video, donate to their cause, and most importantly see some live theatre in Wicker Park.
