A few months ago, one of my dearest friends emailed me from Ghana:
Hey, so over christmas break, when I travelled around Ghana a bit, I met a guy named Sheriff Ghale who it turns out is a pretty popular reggae artist in Ghana, who has actually toured the U.S. and europe, and who lives in Tamale. If he was interested in doing it, would you be interested in a West African reggae singer on CP/LRS?
I said, “of course! yes! cool!” or something similarly Marty-McFlyish. A month later, I got a second email:
now that i only have 2 months left in ghana, all the projects and ideas and things i wanted to do are coming to a boil, and i find that time is speeding up in kind of a scary way and i’m already starting to look back at my stay even though i’m still here. it’s weird. i feel like the united states is this horizon line that i haven’t thought about for half a year, and now all of a sudden i can see this skyline in the distance, and it’s approaching me and getting closer every day, and i’m on a moving train and there’s nothing i can do about it. not that i would want to, i am extremely excited to get back, but i know that this train isn’t going to just pull into the station and let me off. it’s going to collide. i feel like i’m bracing myself for a big culture shock.
anyway, i shot the song with sheriff ghale yesterday morning. it’s beautiful, i’m going to edit it really soon.
And today, I am so happy to present his video. I include these emails because Jacob is a wonderful person with sensitive eyes. He empathizes naturally, he is curious in obvious external and strange internal ways. I hope airing a few private emails allows you, the viewer, a feeling of familiarity with Jacob. And a sense of trust. In that spirit, watch his video. (And please check out some of his other work from abroad here).
