I got to film THE DEFIBULATORS on the morning of my last day in New York City. It was actually something of a coming-of-age moment for me. See, I’ve known Erin and Brian since I was like thirteen-years-old. They were both buddies with my older sister, Allison, who I looked up to and emulated and thought was just crazy cool (she is crazy cool, these weren’t just thirteen-year-old adoration things) and was an actress and all the rest. In the family of lawyers we grew up in, us arts siblings had to stick together.
Anyway, when I used to visit my sister as a kid, I’d get the privilege of hanging out with her college friends, including Brian. Brian is a Texan living in New York City. This must account at least somewhat for his kind nature. He never made thirteen-year-old me feel uncool or out of place. That was hard because thirteen-year-old me basically always felt uncool and out of place.
Not much has changed over the years. When I showed up for the shoot, Brian was running a little behind (I think he was driving a snow truck for the city because of the blizzard? If I heard that right, awesome). Erin let me into their beautiful and eclectically decorated apartment and made me feel right at home. I guess they stick together, too, because of equally kind natures. When Brian showed up, covered in snow and with a big smile on his face, he greeted me with a hug and aksed where all my hair went. Eventually the fiddle player showed up, too, and the morning felt so natural and easy that I took my time getting down to filming and almost missed my bus outta NYC.
I hope you’ll check out The Defibulators, they’re a great Brooklyn Country band with a high energy live show and these lyrics that make you laugh until you’re taken by surprise by their poignancy. I’ll be posting a second song of theirs for RAW BAR later this week, but for today please enjoy, “Your Hearty Laugh.”
