COUCHPOTATOES//LIVINGROOMSONGS PRESENTS: WILL GOSNER
(for slow connections turn off HD or watch on YouTube here)
Will’s CP//LRS session was rife with distractions. It was a terrible, very cold Tuesday night in mid-December when I trekked down to Pilsen, where Will has a charming two story house he shares with a few band mates—oh yeah, Will is the lead singer of the very excellent Lakesigns.
My plan was to take the Red Line to the #18 Westbound, but I missed my bus because even after five years in Chicago I still get totally discombobulated at six-way intersections with those cruel street signs posted at obscure angles that don’t seem to have any interest at all in telling pedestrians which street is which.
So by the time I showed up at Will’s I was frozen and late.
Will was in his living room putting the final touches on his new song, “Ghost.” His roommate (and Lakesigns drummer) Seamus was wolfing down fast food fried chicken.
We started filming.
Will’s roommate and dog came in through the front door in the middle of one take. He lost the brand new song’s rhythm during another. We had a number of false starts because I kept leaping at my buzzing cell phone (added bonus distraction: I’d sent a dumb semi-declaration-of-love-email to an ex the night before; this is only funny in hindsight and at the time was a source of not only consternation but also, to reiterate, wild distraction).
But we endured and ended up getting amazing footage of a great new song. This was one of my most gratifying sessions— the thrill of watching a new song come into being; the pressure of dealing with a really uncontrolled environment; the respite from bad personal decisions.
